Getting ready for your first lesson
A little preparation before your first online lesson goes a long way. Here is what to do.
Before the lesson
- Check your email — you will have received a confirmation email with a link to join the lesson. Have it ready.
- Test your camera and microphone — open the lesson link a few minutes early to make sure your camera and microphone are working. Allow browser permissions when prompted.
- Check your internet connection — if possible, connect by ethernet cable rather than Wi-Fi for a more stable connection.
- Have your instrument ready — tune it beforehand if applicable. Your teacher may spend some of the lesson time checking your tuning, but starting in tune saves time.
Set up your environment
- Choose a quiet room away from background noise.
- Make sure you have good lighting — ideally face a window or lamp rather than sitting with a bright light behind you.
- Position your device so your teacher can see both you and as much of your instrument as possible.
- Have a pencil and notebook nearby for any tips or exercises your teacher recommends.
Be on time
Try to join the lesson room a minute or two before the start time. Your teacher will be there at the scheduled time.
