What influences a teacher's rate
When a teacher sets their price, they typically consider:
- Years of teaching experience — a teacher who has been teaching for 20 years will often charge more than someone who is newer to the profession.
- Formal qualifications — performance degrees, teaching qualifications (e.g. DipABRSM, LTCL), or conservatoire training.
- Instrument and genre specialisms — some instruments have fewer qualified teachers, which can affect rates.
- Exam preparation expertise — teachers experienced with ABRSM, Trinity, or other graded exams sometimes charge a premium.
- Demand — popular teachers with limited availability set rates accordingly.
Higher price does not always mean better fit
A more experienced teacher is not always the best choice for every student. Beginners, younger students, and casual learners often get excellent value and great results from newer or mid-range teachers who specialise in exactly their level and goals.
